The first phase of the music programme at Powerstown Educate Together National School (PETNS) culminated in a showcase performance last week. It is part-funded by Fingal Arts Office at Fingal County Council under the Fingal Musician-in-Residence Programme.
It was such a brilliant afternoon!
Powerstown is located in west Fingal, close to Blanchardstown. There is a growing number of students as the surrounding area expands. PETNS is a wonderful school with a fantastic staff and wonderful, talented children.
Thank you so much for today! Everyone was delighted. - Shauna O'Brien, Powerstown Educate Together National School
The kids showed off their talent and perseverance by performing some of the songs they have been preparing since September with the FAM Outreach team. Between each class performance, FAM Director of Outreach & Development Dónal Kearney interacted with the audience - playing rhythm games and explaining the process of learning the ukulele - during what was a very impressive afternoon of music-making.
Each of the classes involved took their turn to play and sing in a hall full of hundreds of fellow students and several parents. Each class either sang or played ukulele. Some of the classes also availed of live guitar accompaniment. Stephen's class really enjoyed jamming with their own teacher onstage!
It is so inspiring to see these children overcoming stage fright and performing so well in front of an intimidating audience of peers. There is nothing harded - even for seasoned adult performers. Even if things don't always go to plan onstage, it is important for the children to learn that mistakes are part of performance, and that they can improve and learn from them. It is a vital life skill. - Dónal Kearney, co-founder of Fingal Academy of Music
Each class was fantastic and the Outreach team at FAM cannot wait to get going again with these kids in January 2020.
A big thanks must go to Fergus Cahillane, who did brilliant work with the kids of PETNS as part of the FAM Outreach team. FAM would also like to thank every single class teacher who brought their energy and creativity to the showcase preparations! Onwards and upwards in 2020!
