Christmas is almost upon us. We've already had a healthy dose of carol singing, too many boxes of Roses, and Xmas FM is blaring from every car stuck in gridlock on the M50. In that spirit, FAM has been out and about delivering festive cheer. We've been bringing high-energy music workshops into schools across North County Dublin this week as part of our Schools Outreach programme, whereby we offer a free music workshop to every single school in the region.
This week was absolutely filled to the brim with festive singing workshops. FAM Director of Outreach and Development Dónal Kearney delivered singing workshops in schools in Ayr Field, Sutton and Holywell. Dónal may have donned a Santa hat for some of the workshops. He was mistaken for Santa's son in some cases!
Thanks so much for today. The kids had an absolute ball - as did I! - Marianna, St. Paul's Senior National School, Ayr Field
On Monday 9 December, the children and teachers of Holywell Educate Together National School in Swords ran through their Christmas concert pieces. There was lots of "Frozen", carols as Gaeilge, air-guitarring and tin whistle playing. And a few of the teachers because the class band as they strummed their acoustic guitars while their students sang along.
This type of collaboration - between students and also between teacher and student - is an extremely rewarding experience, but it also fosters bonding and rapport amongst the participants. While the concert itself is a great exercise in performance (learning that it's ok to make a mistake while developing extraordinary communication skills), the preparation is a profound lesson in the benefits of discipline, focus, and teamwork.
Well done to all Holywell students and teachers (particularly Paul for his coordination!) - you guys were excellent!
Thanks again for coming into St Fintan's to do the workshop with the boys. They learned a lot and really enjoyed it. I did too! - Mary Claire, St. Fintan's High School, Sutton
On Tuesday 10 December, the TY and 1st year boys of St Fintan's High School, Sutton, participated in a 40-minute workshop with director of Fingal Youth Choir, Eoin Conway. The boys played musical games, learned a little vocal technique, and sampled the basics of beat-boxing. A big thanks to Mary Claire and Aoife for helping organise this opportunity for their students!
On Wednesday 11 December, the sixth classes of St. Paul's, Ayr Field, had a whale of a time. Thanks to Marianna, who coordinated the morning's fun! The boys and girls played lots of rhythm games, they harmonised together, they sang in canon (it sounded so good!), and they ended up performing a very unique rendition of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer!
Check out the actions they added! Who knew music was so much fun?!
